Learn about Smith Lake ↗NORTH ALABAMA · CULLMAN, WALKER & WINSTON COUNTIES
Lewis Smith Lake lies in north Alabama on the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River. Its shoreline reaches across Cullman, Walker, and Winston counties, bringing together lake communities such as Crane Hill, Arley, Jasper / Curry, and Double Springs.
Outdoor Alabama places the lake roughly an hour north of Birmingham or south of Huntsville. Your actual drive depends on the town, road, and cove you are visiting. A property that looks close across the water may require a much longer drive around a lake arm.

CLEAR WATER, WITH A STORY BEHIND IT
Recognized by boating and lake-lifestyle publications as Alabama’s clearest lake and one of the clearest in the country.
The National Boat Owners Association describes Smith Lake as Alabama’s clearest lake, while Lakehouse.com describes it as one of the clearest lakes in the United States.
HISTORICAL FINDING · 2010 DATA / 2011 REPORT
Auburn University’s Water Resources Center reported that Smith had the lowest trophic state index (TSI) among the state’s large reservoirs, citing ADEM’s 2010 report. TSI combines information about nutrients, algae, and water clarity; lower values generally reflect clearer, less nutrient-rich water.
The publications’ descriptions reflect the lake’s reputation rather than a verified current statewide or national measured ranking. Clarity changes with rainfall, runoff, season, and location on the lake.

Start with the places you want to reach by road and by boat. Then compare individual properties for access, shoreline, and the way you plan to use your home.
Explore the lake’s southern and western approaches, including the Curry Highway and Duncan Bridge corridor. Compare the drive to Jasper’s restaurants, shopping, and services with the setting of each waterfront property.
A useful starting point for exploring the lake’s central and northern communities. Look closely at the route to town, the nearest marina, and how a home’s cove connects to the places you enjoy on the water.
Explore lake properties on the Cullman County side, including the Big Bridge corridor. Compare lake homes and building lots individually for shoreline slope, dock access, and the drive toward Cullman.
Explore the western lake area and nearby access to Bankhead National Forest recreation. Balance a wooded lake setting with the road trip to town, groceries, services, and your preferred launch or marina.
LOOK BEYOND THE VIEW
A lake home’s day-to-day experience depends on the shoreline as much as the house. Use these questions to make your property visits more informative.
Smith is a storage reservoir with changing water levels. Ask how a property’s shoreline and dock function at lower levels, and check Alabama Power’s current lake information rather than relying on a summer photograph.
Lake levels & reservoir information ↗The lake’s maximum depth does not tell you the depth beside a particular dock. Ask for property-specific information, the level when it was measured, and how conditions affect your intended boat use.
Walk the route from the house to the shoreline. Consider steps, grade, landings, and how you will carry supplies or maintain the path. Two similar lake views can come with very different access.
Waterfront ownership does not automatically establish permission for a new dock or shoreline work. Review existing records and proposed changes with Alabama Power’s Shoreline Management team and check applicable local requirements.

MAKE THE LAKE FIT YOUR LIFE
Test the everyday drive to work, groceries, healthcare, and other services you use. Confirm internet and mobile coverage at the exact address. Visit the home and shoreline in more than one season when possible.
Consider travel time, upkeep between visits, access for service providers, and how you will care for the dock and grounds. If rentals are part of your plans, verify property-specific restrictions and local requirements before relying on rental income.

YOUR SMITH LAKE QUESTIONS
Yes. Alabama Power operates Smith as a storage reservoir, and levels change with seasonal operations, weather, and other conditions. Review the current lake information and ask how lower water affects the specific property you are considering.
Do not assume so. Dock and shoreline proposals are subject to Alabama Power’s review and applicable requirements. Confirm eligibility, existing permit records, and any proposed changes directly with Shoreline Management.
Compare shoreline access, water depth and seasonality, existing dock records, property condition, road access, utilities, and any property restrictions. Mary Beth can help organize the questions for your search and connect you with the relevant providers and professionals.
Start with your travel route and the places you expect to visit most. Compare Jasper / Curry, Arley, Crane Hill, and Double Springs, then narrow the search by your budget, preferred property type, and waterfront needs.
